Mutation in Breast Cancer Gene May be the Cause Behind ...

A Melbourne University Professor, Melissa Southey, said ?It is particularly frustrating for families that are relying on their family history alone to be able to advise them about what best strategies are for them in terms of cancer management?.

Ben Woods: Confidence, Health and Fun the Recipe for Louisville's Success

I never turn off a University of Louisville basketball game at halftime, but this time, I did.

It was the regular season finale -- senior day at No. 2 Syracuse. After leading by 5 early, Louisville was down by 10 at half. That doesn't seem terrible, but following a home loss to South Florida and woeful shooting in its previous three games, it became unbearable to watch.

For the game (in which I ultimately watched the waning minutes), Louisville shot a slightly-better-than-whole-milk 8.7 percent from the 3-point line. Meanwhile, Syracuse shot a pedestrian 42 percent en route to a 58-49 win and the No. 1 seed in the Big East tournament.

This game seems as if it were two decades ago. Fortunately for Louisville, head coach Rick Pitino had something up his sleeve. He told his team to forget about the regular season and focus on the new season -- the postseason.

It worked. Louisville has won eight straight, including wins over five ranked teams, heading into quite possibly the biggest game in the history of basketball in the state of Kentucky: a Final Four date with University of Kentucky in New Orleans.

How is a team that couldn't hit a basket in its final regular season game playing in the Final Four? All year long, the pundits questioned the amount of talent on the Louisville squad, despite having three McDonald's All-Americans. People also wondered whether Pitino, who was nominated this year for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, was past his prime. This is to be expected after back-to-back first-round NCAA tournament losses.

One reason is now, the team is healthy, or at least, relatively stable. Three players were lost to season-ending injuries, and numerous players missed games due to injuries. The players who will be available Saturday have been playing together since early February.

But the real reason, I think, is confidence, team cohesiveness and, oddly enough, fun.

Louisville has a number of decent shooters, yet they've had abysmal percentages in a couple of losses this year. Like most sports, bad plays and decisions are sometimes hard to shake off, but that's the only way to do it and be successful.

There's no doubt that this is a confident bunch now, and furthermore, they are an entertaining and likable group at that:

Russ Smith ("Russ-diculous" as Pitino calls him), the out-of control sophomore guard who never passes up a shot and made headlines by giving Pitino bunny ears during a live interview;
Gorgui Dieng, the sophomore center who speaks five languages and blocks shots, but then lends a hand to shooters who fall down;
Chane Behanan, the freshman forward who is as bold with his game predictions as he has become battling for points and rebounds, as noted by his West Region MVP award;
Peyton Siva, the often-maligned junior point guard who has returned from a nagging ankle injury in time to play his best and take home the Big East tournament MVP;
Chris Smith, the senior guard who has emerged from the shadow of his big brother, NBA star J.R. Smith, to post solid numbers across the board;
Kyle Kuric, the senior forward who came in as a walk-on, was put on scholarship but gave it up this year for team depth and currently leads the team in points.

Simply put, they're just a good group of guys who play hard and enjoy doing so with each other. And it's not as if these guys haven't had this attitude all year long. It's just a whole lot more fun when you're winning. That's why the game at Syracuse was such a downer for me, because I thought these guys deserved better.

I wasn't the only one who felt this way. Mike Rutherford, from the Louisville sports blog site Card Chronicle, expressed a similar sentiment. "I felt like if things weren't going to change that afternoon then any hope for some miraculous turnaround was officially out the window," Rutherford said. "But now we're here and I still have no idea how it happened."

This opinion could not have been clearer following Louisville's 50-44 victory over Cincinnati in the Big East championship. The happiness displayed by the team, coaches and everyone involved with the team was overwhelming. Team members pranced around the floor together, as if they were kids in the middle of a giant ice cream party. Family members and former Cardinal stars gathered and reveled in the tourney run.

This has been a remarkable accomplishment for a team that has no individuals on any All-America team, nor on the All-Big East team. Pitino deserves a large amount of credit, but despite his optimism, the team could have folded at various times during the postseason. Louisville had big leads whittled to single digits against Marquette and Cincinnati in the Big East tournament, but they prevailed in each. New Mexico made a furious comeback attempt in the NCAA third round, only to fall by 3 points. And when a solid Florida team was up 11 late, the Cards made their own comeback and held on for a 4-point victory.

Louisville is now two victories away from the grand prize -- the NCAA National Championship. Athleticism alone won't prevail, but a combination of teamwork and confidence, together with a dash of craziness and light-heartedness might do the trick. If anyone warrants the title, it's this group of uncommon Cards.

A University of Adelaide study has revealed that inducing labor in pregnant women when it's not medically necessary is more likely to result in complications at birth.

Elective induction is becoming more common around the world, with many women being induced for social and other non-medical reasons.

Dr Rosalie Grivell from the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute has studied the data of more than 28,000 births from across South Australia, from 2006 to 2007.

She compared cases in which women had undergone spontaneous onset of labor, induction of labor for recognized medical reasons, and induction of labor for "non-recognized" reasons.

Compared with women who entered labor spontaneously, induction for non-recognized reasons was associated with a 67% increased chance of requiring a cesarean section.

It also significantly increased the chance of the newborn infant requiring nursery care in a Special Care Baby Unit (an increased risk of 64%) or requiring treatment (an increased risk of 44%) compared with infants born following spontaneous onset of labor.

"Our research is aimed at better understanding the optimal timing and management of labor and birth for women with an uncomplicated pregnancy," Dr Grivell said.

"We hope our findings will increase awareness of the potential harmful effects that elective induction can have on both women and their infants. In the absence of serious maternal or fetal problems or a medical recommendation, induction of labor is best avoided."

Dr Grivell said the lowest risk of adverse complications both for mother and baby occurred with the spontaneous onset of labor between 38 and 39 weeks.

"While a natural birth is not always possible for women who already have complications in pregnancy, the results of this study suggest that for women whose pregnancy is uncomplicated, awaiting the spontaneous onset of labor is best," Dr Grivell said.

Mom, four kids found dead in Ark. fire

A mother and her four children were found dead Thursday after a fire swept through their duplex in ?Jacksonville, Ark., officials said.

Jacksonville Fire Battalion Chief Bob Thornton told the Associated Press that firefighters were called to the duplex around 6 a.m. by a neighbor who reported smelling smoke.

Thornton told the AP ?that no one answered the door and firefighters using thermal imaging did not detect any signs of a?blaze from outside the apartment.

He said they left without going inside? A maintenance worker discovered the bodies an hour later, the AP reported.

Thornton said that there was no fire burning when officials returned but there were signs one had burned overnight. Firefighters don?t suspect arson.

The ages of the victims weren?t immediately known.

Game of the Week: Super Mario Sunshine | Video Games, Reviews ...

Super Mario Sunshine was our favourite plumber?s first starring role on the Gamecube. It was an unusually controversial Mario title, owing to some quite revolutionary moves for the franchise.

The story finds our hero and Peach taking a well-deserved vacation (Mario has deserved it at any rate, we don?t know what if anything Peach fills her days with). Arriving at Isle Delfino, we find the idyllic resort has been vandalised by huge quantities of a mysterious substance, almost drowning some residents and bringing life to a virtual standstill. The perpetrator appears to be none other than Mario himself, who is tried for the crime and ordered to clean the entire island himself. Being the all-round great guy that he is, he sets to this task immediately to clear his name and unmask the impostor (For the fans, there?s some light princess kidnap shenanigans in the plot too).

Fortunately, he has just met the perfect partner for this mission at the airport, in the shape of the much-maligned FLUDD (Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device). This is an odd kind of water powered backpack. It enables Mario to spray water, to ward off enemies or clean off the mess left by his doppelganger?s magical paintbrush. But it?s no glorified watergun. FLUDD acquires different nozzles throughout the game, allowing the likes of hover jumps and rocket jumps. For some, this addition removed much of the challenge from the game, particularly with the hover ability acting as a kind of crutch. As such, the brief sections where the impostor stole your backpack were a favourite. These allowed you to traverse some intricate platform sections alone, which is what Mario (and his designers) do best.

The hub world, and the worlds themselves, broke from the norm again. There?s none of the themed snow levels, water levels, and lava levels we?re accustomed to. Sunshine is based entirely on the island?s tropical concept. An area of Delfino acts as the castle from Super Mario 64, without the great variety offered by the paintings. This isn?t to say that the game?s levels are tediously samey, but the sun-kissed flavour from start to finish was not to
everyone?s taste.

Super Mario Sunshine was quite an oddball release. The formula of these games is one that hasn?t changed too much over the years. The Gamecube iteration was one that dared to add a few extra ingredients to the mix, and mess with conventions. It was not unsuccessful, as sales, reviews and fan opinions largely demonstrate. But there are detractors, and it is easy to see why, as I?ve shown. The bottom line, however, is that a chosen setting and a somewhat gimmicky new mechanic does not mean the quality of the core gameplay simply disappears. For some, Sunshine is the worst in the series. For others, it?s the best. All that matters is that the old Mario magic is certainly present.
