Chimps bite, drag man at sanctuary in South Africa

(AP) ? Chimpanzees at a sanctuary for the animals in eastern South Africa pulled an American working there into their enclosure, bit him severely and dragged him nearly a half mile (kilometer), according to a paramedic official and local media reports.

The man was leading a tour group at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden near Nelspruit, some 180 miles (300 kilometers) from Johannesburg, Thursday when two chimpanzees grabbed his feet and pulled him under a fence into their enclosure, Jeffrey Wicks of the Netcare911 medical emergency services company said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press on Friday.

Mediclinic Nelspruit, the hospital where he was taken, said Friday he was in intensive care in critical condition after undergoing surgery Thursday.

The man had "multiple and severe bite wounds" and was dragged nearly a kilometer by the chimpanzees, Wicks said.

Beeld, a South African newspaper, reported Friday that the man was an American researcher who was giving tourists a lecture at the time of the attack. The tourists were escorted to safety by staff members as the chimpanzees dragged the man out of their enclosure, Beeld reported. The sanctuary's director fired into the air to scare the chimps away from the man, and then chased the animals back into their enclosure. Beeld reported the man lost part of an ear and parts of his fingers.

The Associated Press did not immediately get responses to phone calls and an email seeking comment from officials at the institute and its sanctuary.

The international institute founded by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall opened the sanctuary in 2006. It is a home to chimpanzees, which are not native to South Africa, rescued from further north in Africa. Some of the chimpanzees at the sanctuary lost their parents to poachers in countries where they are hunted for their meat, and others were held in captivity in cruel conditions as little more than roadside attractions.

In the United States this week, lawyers for a Connecticut woman who was attacked in 2009 by a friend's chimpanzee filed papers accusing state officials of failing to seize the animal before the mauling despite a staff member's warning that it was dangerous. The chimpanzee ripped off the woman's nose, lips, eyelids and hands before being killed by police, and the woman was blinded and has had a face transplant.

Why Don?t Christians Have To Get Circumcised?

Circumcision was uniquely associated with Jews in first-century Rome, even though other ethnic and religious groups practiced it. Romans wrote satirical poems mocking the Jews for taking a day off each week, refusing to eat pork, worshipping a sky god, and removing their sons? foreskin. It is, therefore, neither surprising that early Christian converts sought advice on whether to adopt the practice of circumcision nor that Paul made it the focus of several of his famous letters.

YORK, Maine ? A Seacoast Baseball Academy coach has been arrested by Concord, N.H., police and charged with aggravated felonious sexual assault of juveniles.

Robert A. Joubert, 58, of Manchester, N.H., no street address given, was arraigned on four Class A felony counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault and one Class A misdemeanor count of sexual assault Thursday afternoon. He was scheduled to be arraigned in Concord District Court. However, arraignment took place at Concord Hospital as Joubert was transported there with a medical condition, according to Lt. Timothy O'Malley, commander of the Criminal Investigations Division with Concord police.

Joubert's bail was set at $450,000 cash.

The charges out of Concord allege there is more than one victim, all male juveniles at the time of the alleged assaults, according to O'Malley.

?It was pattern sexual assaults over a period of time between 1995 and 2004 in Concord,? O'Malley said.

Joubert was a coach with the Seacoast Baseball Academy, which is located at 1050 Route 1, in York, Maine, according to its Web site. The building is known as the York Sports Center. The owner of the building is listed as York Sports and Health Center, LLC, Dirigo Sport Center in Medford, Mass., according to information on the town of York's assessing database. No one with the business could be reached for comment Thursday.

The Seacoast Baseball Academy Web site features numerous testimonials praising the coaching of Joubert. The positive comments are attributed to parents from York and the New Hampshire communities of North Hampton, Rye and Somersworth.

According to the Seacoast Baseball Academy Web site, Joubert has provided lessons to athletes from York and Berwick in Maine, and Exeter, Dover, Durham, Hampton, North Hampton, Portsmouth, Rye and Stratham in New Hampshire.

The Seacoast Baseball Academy is not, and has never been, affiliated with the York Parks and Recreation Department, according to the town's Parks and Recreation Director Mike Sullivan.

According to a York Little League official who declined to be identified, Joubert was never directly affiliated with the league, but did help out with players and coaches from time to time. His background checks came back negative, he said.

Joubert was a contract coach out of the York Sports Center, according to York Police Chief Doug Bracy. There are no charges against Joubert out of York, he said.

?Our concern is to do a timeline and follow him to acquaintances to find out whether there are other victims,? Bracy said.

Bracy said the investigation began earlier this year with an e-mail he received concerning Joubert, which he forwarded to investigators.

In March this year, the York Police Department received a complaint alleging that Joubert had been engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with minors, according to O'Malley. As a result of information developed in York's investigation, the FBI was contacted. The FBI, together with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, alerted the Concord Police Department in May of potential crimes committed in Concord.

Detectives from Concord learned that Joubert has been involved in coaching youth baseball and hockey over the past 15 years, O'Malley said. Concord detectives identified possible victims and learned that multiple sexual assaults had occurred in Concord, according to O'Malley. All of the alleged victims were juveniles at the time of the assaults, he said.

As a result of the information developed in this case, Joubert was arrested Thursday by Concord detectives with assistance from New Hampshire State Police.

The investigation leading up to Joubert's arrest involved multiple law enforcement agencies, to include the Concord Police Department, FBI, York Police Department, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Manchester Police Department, New Hampshire State Police, and the Pembroke Police Department.

A special phone number has been established for any member of the public who has information related to this investigation: (800) CALL-FBI or (800) 225-5324 (after calling hit prompt 9, then prompt 3). This number will be available for potential witnesses or victims to leave a voicemail anytime, police said. The voicemail will be checked three times a day and will be in place until late August. Information can also be reported to Concord police by calling (603) 225-8600 or the Concord Regional Crimeline at (603) 226-3100.

Like humans, dolphins have brainy genes

Evolution-wise, bottlenose dolphins have left their mammalian brothers in the dust, and new research is showing what genes they changed to do it. These genes include those involved in brain and metabolism.

These changes could be why dolphins are known to be exceptionally smart, able to use tools, recognize themselves and even communicate with each other and with trainers.

"We are interested in what makes a big brain from a molecular perspective," study researcher Michael McGowen, of Wayne State University School of Medicine in Michigan, told LiveSCience. "We decided to look at genes in the dolphin genome to see if there are similarities in the genes that have changed on the dolphin lineage and those that have changed on the primate lineage."

    1. Scientists to reveal Stephen Hawking's 'brain hack'

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: After months of tweaking, researchers are finally ready to show off a high-tech headband that can translate Stephen Hawking's brain waves into speech.

    2. Seven summer books for smarties
    3. Work unearths ancient road in Greece
    4. Missing link for wonky-eyed flatfish found

The researchers compared about 10,000 genes from the bottlenose dolphin with nine other animals. (These included the cow, horse, dog, mouse, human, elephant, opossum, platypus and chicken ? cows being the dolphin's closest relatives with a sequenced genome.)

By studying its mutations, they pinpointed which genes were "evolving" or what scientists call "being selected for" ? genes that underwent changes and were passed on to future generations of dolphins ? by comparing them to the analogous genes from the other species. If a dolphin gene has more protein-changing mutations than the cow version, for instance, that means it was actively evolving in the dolphin population at some time. [ Animal Code: Our Favorite Genomes ]

Brain changes
More than 200 of the genes in their survey were drastically changed in the dolphins. Twenty-seven of these were involved in the nervous system (like the brain and sensory organs ). There were also many changes in the genes related to metabolism (similar to changes seen in primates), which McGowen said are important because, "brain tissue uses much more energy than other tissues."

While we know these genes are associated with the brain, and this study says the genes are different in smarter animals, the researchers caution against linking them directly. Differences in the gene's "code" doesn't mean the gene actually acts any differently in the animal.

"We may not know exactly what they do yet even in humans or mice (the two most well-characterized mammals from a genetic perspective), much less dolphins; however, their function in the brain points to their importance," McGowen said. "Probably, changes in these genes could have led to the amazing cognitive capacity seen in dolphins ? it definitely points in that direction."

Set apart
Unexpectedly, the researchers also saw that the dolphins were evolving more slowly than some of the other animals, a trait also seen in other mammals with big brains.

"Over time (since the split between dolphins and cows about 70 million years ago), we observe many more mutations or changes in the DNA along the cow branch (and indeed horse and dog branches) than we do along the dolphin branch," McGowen told LiveScience in an email. "This is exactly what we see in primates and elephants."

This is probably because these animals are using a different life-history approach ? investing more in their offspring, but having fewer babies ? which leads to slower evolution.

"It is striking that we see such similar molecular rates between all of these lineages and they have all such comparative large brains," McGowen said of the dolphins and primates.

The research is detailed in the June 27 issue of the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.

(AP) ? Getting an AIDS test at the drugstore could become as common as a flu shot or blood pressure check, if a new pilot program takes off.

The $1.2 million program will offer the free rapid HIV tests at pharmacies and in-store clinics in 24 cities and rural communities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday.

"We believe we can reach more people by making testing more accessible and reduce the stigma associated with HIV," Dr. Kevin Fenton, who oversees the agency's HIV prevention programs, said in a statement.

The tests are already available at seven places, including Washington, D.C., Oakland, Calif., and an Indian health service clinic in Montana. The CDC will soon pick 17 more locations.

The HIV test is a swab inside the mouth; it takes about 20 minutes for a preliminary result. The test maker says it's correct 99 percent of the time. If the test is positive for the AIDS virus, pharmacy employees will refer customers to a local health department or other health care providers for a lab blood test to confirm the results, counseling and treatment. The workers are expected to deliver the news face-to-face and give customers privacy, the CDC said.

An estimated 1.1 million Americans are infected with HIV, but as many as 20 percent of them don't know they carry the virus, according to the CDC. It can take a decade or more for an infection to cause symptoms and illness.

Since 2006, the CDC has recommended that all Americans ages 13 to 64 get tested at least once, not just those considered at highest risk: gay men and intravenous drug users. But fewer than half of adults younger than 65 have been tested, according to the agency's most recent statistics.

It's important to know about infection not only for treating the condition but also to take steps to prevent spreading it to others. An HIV diagnosis used to be a death sentence, but medications now allow those infected to live longer and healthier lives.

On special occasions, health organizations have sent workers to some drugstores to offer HIV testing. This week, Walgreens ? the nation's largest chain of pharmacies ? is teaming with health departments and AIDS groups to offer free tests in 20 cities.

But in that program, health professionals conduct the tests and deliver the news. The CDC program aims to train pharmacy staff to test and deliver the results themselves.

"I'm excited. It's such a new and novel thing for us," said Sarah Freedman, who manages a Walgreens in Washington, D.C., that is participating in the pilot program.

At her pharmacy, prominent signs advertise the test, which is then done in a private room. The pharmacy has also taken steps to let a customer discreetly request the test, putting out stacks of special test request cards ? they look like business cards ? at George Washington University and nearby businesses. Anyone seeking a test can simply hand the card to the clerk, she said.

Only three or four customers have gone through with a test in the first few weeks.

"We get a lot of questions," she said. "Usually they get the information and they go and sit on it and think about it."

The drugstores are expected to keep the test confidential. Pharmacy workers are to refer customers with positive tests to counseling and other services.

When the project ends next summer, CDC officials will analyze what worked well and what didn't, said Paul Weidle, the epidemiologist who is heading up the project.

The program carries both promise and potential pitfalls, said Julie Davids, a longtime advocate who now works for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago.

More testing is a plus, she said. And even if they don't get a free test, signs in the drugstores may prompt people to get tested at a doctor's office or clinic where they feel more comfortable, said Davids.

But Davids said pharmacies more used to handling cholesterol screenings might have difficulty responding to patients who learn in a drugstore they're HIV-positive.

"A person may freeze up and fall apart later," or get emotional on the spot and even talk about suicide, she said.

In addition to Freedman's store, a second Walgreens in Washington is offering the test, as well as branches in Chicago and Lithonia, Ga. The other sites are East Pines Pharmacy in Riverdale, Md., Mike's Pharmacy in Oakland, Calif. and a federal Indian Health Service location in Billings, Mont.

Each location will get enough tests to check 200 to 300 people. Made by OraSure Technologies Inc., the $17.50 test is the only government-approved rapid HIV test that uses saliva. Other rapid tests on the market analyze a finger-prick blood sample. The tests are used routinely in doctor's offices, hospitals and clinics.

The OraSure swab test's stick-like testing device is used to wipe the inside of the mouth, then it is put in a solution, said company spokesman Ron Ticho. If two lines appear, that indicates a positive test.

The company is seeking government approval to sell it over-the-counter for home testing. A decision is expected later this year.

The test is sold in about 40 countries, including Mexico, Italy, South Korea and South Africa. Ticho said he is not aware of another country where pharmacies routinely offer the testing.

European plan tries to convince Germany to do more

(AP) ? Top European officials have called on countries that use the euro to surrender more control over their national budgets, a move apparently aimed at easing Germany's fears of sharing debt burdens with struggling governments like Spain or Italy.

The plan is meant to be a grand vision to save the euro currency from financial disaster and to set up negotiations between leaders at a key European Union summit on Thursday.

Germany, Europe's biggest and strongest economy, is increasingly isolated in its refusal to quickly adopt measures such as jointly issued eurobonds, which would see it take on some of the debt risk of financially weak countries. Some experts say such debt-sharing is what Europe needs to end its crisis as it would help defuse the prospect of unaffordable bailouts for Spain or Italy.

But Germany is worried that such debt-sharing would tempt financially weak countries to spend irresponsibly once again and not reform their economies. Reassuring Berlin that governments would face tough oversight of their budgets would be key to easing Germany's resistance to debt-sharing.

"What is at stake is...the overall confidence in the euro area, and indeed in our commitment to the European project," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso told reporters in Brussels. "For a genuine economic and monetary union to be established, I think we need a banking union, a fiscal union, and further steps toward a political union."

The plan was was drawn up by the "gang of four" top European officials: Barroso along with Council President Herman Van Rompuy, Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Central Bank President Mario Draghi.

It is doubtful whether eurozone governments will be willing to cede control over their budgets and whether citizens of European countries would accept the idea even if their leaders sign off on the idea.

The plan is to be debated by leaders from around Europe at a summit in Brussels Thursday and Friday that takes place against a backdrop of financial strains that are threatening to shatter the single currency.

On Monday, Spain requested financial help to recapitalize its banking industry, and yields on Spanish and Italian government bonds are rising toward levels that forced the governments of Greece, Portugal and Ireland to seek bailouts. But Spain and Italy are widely considered "too big to bail" ? even for Germany.

The plan proposes a "medium term" move towards eurobonds, as well as creating a banking union with a single authority. This authority, probably the ECB, would have the power to shut insolvent banks and insure deposits, with help from Europe's permanent bailout fund.

Though the plan is similar to those put forward by the International Monetary Fund and French President Francois Hollande, it was not embraced by Germany.

Chancellor Angela Merkel told a meeting of her party Tuesday afternoon that she would not accept full debt-sharing "as long as I live." A lawmaker who was present confirmed the remarks to the Associated Press, on condition of anonymity, but noted that she was referring to a full sharing of all national debts. Her office declined to comment.

Despite her strong words, Merkel has during the course of the European crisis accepted measures she had previously ruled out. She had opposed having a permanent rescue fund for Europe, for example, before then accepting it.

Even if rejecting eurobonds in all but the longest time frame is only a negotiating stance, it is clear that Merkel and her finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble oppose debt-sharing until countries have carried out reforms or credibly committed to do so, and the Eurozone has become better integrated than it is now. It is less clear how they believe the monetary union can survive its current stress to get to that point.

Merkel herself has said the solution to the crisis lies in "more Europe" in the form of better central controls.

Analysts were skeptical that the" gang of four" plan would lead to a concrete plan at the summit.

"Such proposals are just bureaucratic fine-tuning, rather than game-changing policies that will result in debt mutualisation and a banking Union," said analyst Neil MacKinnon of VTB Capital.

"As a result, the EU Summit will likely produce re-hashed plans for closer fiscal integration and a banking union but without any substantive detail of how it will actually be put into practice."

Though many European citizens will be opposed to the idea of surrendering control over their budgets, their governments all agreed to abide by a 3 percent deficit limit when they joined the single currency.

After multiple violations of the limit ? by Germany and France in the early 2000s, by a host of countries in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, and by Greece the whole time ? the 3 percent limit was reaffirmed in a new pact signed in January but not yet ratified. That pact also obliges eurozone countries to submit preliminary budgets to Brussels each year.

The latest plan published Tuesday was short on detail, but appeared to propose an even closer oversight of national budgets: "upper limits on the annual budget balance and on government debt levels of individual member states could be agreed in common," it said. Then, a "euro area level" authority could "require changes" to budgets of countries that stray.

At the end of the report, Van Rompuy volunteered to develop a "specific and time-bound roadmap for the achievement of the genuine economic and monetary union" by December.

'Newsroom': Five Reasons To Watch

New HBO series stars Jeff Daniels and is penned by 'Social Network' and 'West Wing' writer Aaron Sorkin.
By Kara Warner

Jeff Daniels in "The Newsroom"
Photo:

HBO is on quite a roll with its Sunday night programming. In the wake of TV series success stories like "The Sopranos," "True Blood," "Game of Thrones," "Veep" and "Girls," the award-winning cable network has developed and debuted yet another buzzworthy show, "Newsroom."

Why is it buzzworthy? Because it's written and created by Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy winner Aaron Sorkin and it's a television show about television, specifically the behind-the-scenes drama involved in the production of a nightly news show. The major characters include a hotheaded and egocentric anchor (Jeff Daniels), his strong-willed-yet-soothing executive producer and ex-girlfriend (Emily Mortimer), their jovial and bourbon-loving boss (Sam Waterston), and the idealistic newbie (Alison Pill) who's dating a senior producer. There's much to love and hate judging from the mixed reviews from critics, but we're totally hooked. Here are five things to love about "Newsroom."

Sorkin Speak
Aaron Sorkin didn't win a Best Screenplay Oscar for "The Social Network" or Emmys galore for "The West Wing" for nothing. The man can write the heck out of dialogue. Say what you will about the pretentiousness, preaching and politics involved in an action-packed pilot that calls out America (and the mainstream media) for not being as good as it can be, but Sorkin moves things along at a crackling clip complete with pop-culture references from sources ranging from Twitter to Don Quixote.

Going Back to the Future
"Newsroom" is set in 2010 and the first episode revolves around the news of the BP oil spill. The show's unique setting allows Sorkin to write around, and in some ways re-write, history, giving the "News Night" team the fictionalized plotline of being the only major news program to dedicate considerable airtime to early reports. Each episode will deal with fictionalized perspectives on memorable real-life news events and how they were reported.

Inside Baseball
Sorkin loves his behind-the-scenes-style stories — see his previous shows "Sports Night," "The West Wing" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip." In setting a show around something with which we're all familiar (TV news, the White House) on a superficial level and then adding a healthy dose of interpersonal drama that everyone goes through at their respective places of work, Sorkin piques interest quite effectively. With "Newsroom," the majority of the population can relate to watching TV news at some point in their lives, and Sorkin is using that to his advantage to draw in the audience as well as challenge them to think more critically about what they watch. We shouldn't have to point out that it's all a highly romanticized version of the real story, but there you have it.

Jeff Daniels
Although his comedic brilliance in "Dumb and Dumber" will live on forever, Daniels' equally special skills as a dramatic actor are on full display in playing "News Night" anchor Will McAvoy. He is arrogant and self-obsessed, moody and unpredictable, which might all come off as a bland stereotype were the role in less adept hands than Daniels'. In short, McAvoy isn't all bark and bite and blowhard. There are finely flawed layers to slowly peel away as we greet new sides of his character in each episode.

Sam Waterston (and Other Support Cast)
It would be a disservice to lump all of the other castmembers into one brief blurb, so this week's "Newsroom" MVP award goes to Sam Waterston for bringing wit and lasting charm to the character of OG newsman Charlie Skinner. There's a lot to like about Skinner since he's the big bad boss making sure "News Night" continues to exist, in the process not firing the overly opinionated anchor, and re-hiring said anchor's former flame. He clearly has a backbone, integrity and an eye for talent, even if that eye is frequently blurry from day drinking.

Daytime Emmys 2012 Winners Revealed

The Daytime Emmys showered "General Hospital" with five trophies, including best drama, while giving Regis Philbin a fond farewell as a departing talk-show host.

NBC's "Today" show won as best morning show and the syndicated "Jeopardy!" was named best game show at the annual ceremony Saturday.

"Live with Regis and Kelly" was saluted as best entertainment talk show (its first-ever nod in that category) and for best talk-show hosts. Philbin ended his long run as its co-host last November, with a replacement yet to be named to join Kelly Ripa as the syndicated series continues.

Heather Tom, who won as best lead actress for CBS' "The Bold and the Beautiful," made history as the first to win in that category after having previously won as both best younger actress and supporting actress.

Anthony Geary won as lead actor for "General Hospital." The ABC soap also won for supporting actress (Nancy Lee Grahn), supporting actor (Jonathan Jackson), and directing team.

The syndicated "Dr. Oz" was named best informative talk show.

Bill Geddie, longtime associate of Barbara Walters and executive producer of her ABC talk show "The View," received the life achievement award.

"There's not a lot of glamour and glory in daytime," Geddie told the room in his acceptance remarks. "But when you think about it, we're all here with the best of intentions: We just love making TV!"

Held in Beverly Hills, Calif., the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards was telecast on the HLN channel, having moved to cable for the first time after airing on CBS the past two years. The awards are bestowed by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The Beverly Hilton, where the presentation originated, was the site only hours earlier of what investigators believe was a murder-suicide. Police responding to a report of a shooting late Friday found a man and a woman dead from gunshot wounds in a guest room. The luxury hotel was also the site of Whitney Houston's death in February, when the singer drowned in the bathtub of her room.

Beverly Hilton Murder-Suicide: 2 Dead At Daytime Emmy Awards Venue

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Two people have been found dead in what investigators believe was a murder-suicide at the Beverly Hilton, just hours before the Daytime Emmy Awards are being held at the posh hotel, police said Saturday.

Police responding to a report of a shooting late Friday found a man and a woman dead from gunshot wounds in a hotel room, Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen said.

Police would give no other details on the two people, their relationship, or the circumstances of the shooting. Police would not comment on whether the deaths were connected to the Emmy awards.

Coroner's officials had yet to begin their investigation, but said they were a man in his late 60s and a woman in her mid-50s.

The luxury hotel was also the site of Whitney Houston's death in February. The singer drowned in the bathtub of her fourth-floor room, just a few hours before she was to attend record executive Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy party in the ballroom downstairs.

An HLN spokeswoman, Alison Rudnick, said the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will go on as scheduled. The cable news channel will be broadcasting live the ceremony, which honors the best in soap operas and talk shows.

The hotel also hosts several other annual galas, including the Golden Globe Awards.

Before the Friday shootings, Beverly Hills had just six homicides since 2008. Such rare cases usually draw national attention, as in the death of a Hollywood publicist who was shot while she was driving after a movie premiere in November 2010. Police say Ronni Chasen was killed in an apparent bungled robbery by a career criminal who later killed himself when approached by police.

Mexico got wrong man in high-profile drug arrest

A man accused of being a cocaine trafficker and the son of Mexico's most wanted drug lord Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman is an automobile dealer swept up in a case of mistaken identity, Mexico's attorney general's office confirmed late Friday.

Mexican marines seized the suspect on Thursday outside Guadalajara and flew him to Mexico City, where they paraded him in front of the media and identified him as Jesus Alfredo Guzman, alias "El Gordo" or "The Fat One."

They said they found him with an arsenal of rifles, pistols and grenades and about $160,000 in cash.

But lawyer Veronica Guerrero told a news conference that her client's real name is Felix Beltran and that he is an innocent car dealer.

Mexico's attorney general's office confirmed later that several identity tests reveal the man was indeed Leon and not the drug trafficker, Telemundo reported.

"This is a case of total confusion over people," said Guerrero, who was accompanied by a woman who said she is the suspect's mother.

Mexico's attorney general's office confirmed late Friday that several identity tests reveal the man was indeed Leon and not the drug trafficker.

Thursday's arrest won praise from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which has sought Jesus Alfredo Guzman since he was indicted for cocaine trafficking in 2009.

His father, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, faces dozens of charges of racketeering and drug smuggling in U.S. courts. There is a $5 million reward for his capture.

The arrest came just over a week before Mexicans vote for a leader to replace President Felipe Calderon.

Brutal clashes between drug cartels and Mexican authorities have killed more than 55,000 people since Calderon launched a crackdown on the gangs in late 2006.

The candidate of Calderon's National Action Party, Josefina Vazquez Mota, is in third place, partly because of public dissatisfaction over the drug war.

On Thursday Vazquez Mota congratulated the marines on the arrest.

Enrique Pena Nieto, candidate for the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, has a double-digit lead in most polls.
