My Job, And The Reality Of Doing Business With Other Companies
Over the last 5 years, I have spent a lot of my time on the internet helping businesses with their online marketing campaigns. My job involves optimising websites for search engines, setting up pay per click ads, designing websites, writing out web copy and also managing social media accounts. For a lot of people, this might sound like a fun job. In some respects it actually is, but when you spend 10-12 hours a day on the internet on average 5 days a week ? you start getting fed up of your chair and computer screen, and you also start to miss the outside world.
For me, the internet is a great place to spend time, however, I?ve learnt that the outside world is much more fun. Meeting new people is in fact the best way to find new business and create greater opportunities. Some might say that the world wide web can also be used to find business partners and create opportunities, but I haven?t experienced a lot of fortune online. I?ve found 95% of my clients in the real world. As I deal with home-based and private businesses, plus I take in greater transactions than B2C companies, clients actually want to see my face and know that I?m a real person before doing business with me.
Let?s face it, I?m not a Bill Gates ? so I can?t charge clients huge fees and expect them to make payments to me over the internet. Also, many people are still worried about making purchases online. Who can blame them? There are so many online scammers on the internet ready to prey on vulnerable individuals.
Is A Career In Internet Marketing All It?s Made Out To Be?
Many people ask me if I make a lot of money marketing online. The answer to this question is no. Firstly, I?ve only got about 5-6 years experience in the industry. I just learnt the art of gaining sponsors recently, and only developed the courage to make videos on Youtube last year. As I didn?t really study from the age of 16 to 21, I had to do a lot of work to improve my writing and speaking skills. It hasn?t been easy at all. I?ve had to be extremely patient to reach the level that I reckon I am at now ? in terms of marketing online. Luckily, I?ve managed to keep my feet on the ground, and just educate myself as much as possible ? in order to develop greater marketing skills.
What I can say to those who intend on becoming marketers is this? Get ready to work your socks off if you haven?t worked as a marketer in the past or you haven?t got a strong educational background. The marketing industry is extremely competitive, and there are so many free marketing tools out there along with e-books ? that anyone can have a go at trying to sell websites and training programs. It?s such an open industry!
Advice For Marketing Newbies?
Marketing newbies tend to spend a lot of money buying e-books and online marketing training programs in order to learn the ins and outs of SEO, pay per click, website design, social media advertising and so forth. I did the same thing myself when I wanted to learn about how to market on the internet. I think it was worth it though. I?ve now got an education, and I know how to sell things much more easily. I don?t regret spending thousands of pounds in learning how to market online.
For some people, spending thousands of pounds learning how to market online may be out of the question. What I?d say to them is this: if you haven?t got a lot of cash to spend, then use it wisely. It?s better to invest in one spectacular internet marketing course, then to invest in a range of poor courses. Cheaper isn?t necessarily better.
Will Knowing How To Market Online Make Me Rich?
Let?s be clear about this. Knowing how to market online will not make you rich. Making a lot of money out of this industry depends on a whole range of factors. You might be a skillful marketer, but it will count for nothing if you don?t have the right connections and a strong client base. In fact, the odds of you making a living off the internet are AGAINST you. You may totally fail as a marketer. Think about this for one moment? How many kids dream about becoming professional footballers but never end up making it? I can tell you LOADS, and I was one of these kids. Hey, life just doesn?t turn out as planned sometimes.
OK, so knowing how to market online might not make you rich. But if you take the right approach to learning the trade, you?ll learn a lot about how the business world actually works, along with the art of persuasion and selling. You can develop your writing, speaking and presentation skills too. Yes, you might not be a fan of public speaking, but the best online marketers tend to be excellent public speakers. Don?t worry though, they didn?t become brilliant public speakers overnight. Do you think they had to study a lot in order to know what to say, and how to persuade others? You bet.
Anyway, with these sorts of skills, you?re bound to get a job in the future. You?ll become a very powerful advertising tool.
Where Are The Best Places To Advertise?
In my opinion, you have to be where everybody else is. People are now spending a lot of their time on Facebook and Youtube. According to Alexa (http://www.alexa.com), Facebook is the second most visited website in the world, and Youtube is the third. Although Google is the most visited website in the world, I think it?s not as addictive as Facebook and Youtube. I?m not saying that companies should forget about advertising on Google though. It?s still a brilliant place to advertise if you know how to reach the right market, and you?ve got an excellent product or service to sell. I?m a great fan of Google personally, as my old removals company would never have made any money without it.
The Future Of Marketing
I know that this is going to be an obvious thing to say, but I reckon companies have to think about ways of marketing to mobile users. Mobile devices will get quicker, smarter and slimmer during the next few years, and consumers might abandon their laptops altogether by 2015.
I believe that consumers are already abandoning their laptops. Am I saying that laptops and computers won?t be used in 2015? Certainly not. I think businesses and self employed individuals will always need larger computers to do their work on. I can?t see big arcade companies developing ultra-graphical games on mobile devices in 2015. Excuse me if I turn out to be wrong with these predictions!
The Singularity
Will big bad AI machines take over the world in the near future? Will we be gobbled up by a big nasty black hole? In my opinion, who knows?
Technology hasn?t always helped humans. We?re still using firepower to kill each other till this day. If we do end up creating a big bad AI machine that takes over the world, we can?t say that we weren?t warned about the dangers of creating sophisticated technologies in the past. Many innocent people were victim to an outrageous nuclear explosion in Hiroshima 1945. That wasn?t too long ago.
In terms of black holes swallowing up the Earth. I reckon the chances are probably slim, especially in my lifetime. Many people have spoken about CERN, and its ability to create black holes, but I?m not sure if these concerns hold up to facts. I?d have to dig deeper into the topic to find out if these accusations about CERN are actually true.
