- Google Once Again Selling the Nexus 4 in the US, Canada, Germany, More Locations to Come Soon (Update) The perpetually out-of-stock Nexus 4 is finally available again in the Google Play Store. Customers in the US, Canada, and Germany can now order the smartphone in both 8GB and 16GB models. Expect a shipping time of one to two weeks, although actual wait times have been reported to be much shorter. Best Buy also has the phone available, provided you plan to sign up with T-Mobile. - Microsoft's 64GB Surface Pro Will Only Have 23GB Usable Storage If you're looking to get a Surface Pro when it launches next week, there's one major caveat to keep in mind: the tablet will come with a lot of it's free space already used. This will leave those who buy the 64 GB model with only 23 GB of free space, and 83 GB free on the 128 GB model. However, some of this can be reclaimed due to a portion of that already-used space set aside for recovery. By creating a backup bootable USB device you'll be able to delete the recovery partition and free up a bit more space. [The Verge]
- Apple Increases iPad with Retina Display to 128GB Today Apple announced that it will be selling a 128 GB version of the iPad with Retina display. This version is otherwise identical to the last model that went on sale last fall, and will sell for $929 with WiFi and Cellular or $799 for WiFi only. - U.S. Government Warns of Hack Threat to Network Gear The US Department of Homeland Security's Computer Emergency Readiness Team issued a warning today urging everyone to disable Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol due to new findings from security company Rapid7. To avoid being exploited, you should disable UPnP once you have your network set up?it won't have any negative effect on performance. [Reuters]
- YouTube Set to Introduce Paid Subscriptions This Spring YouTube will soon experiment with paid subscriptions. Likely to be tested on one of it's more popular networks like Machinima or Fullscreen, the paid channels will cost somewhere between $1 and $5 a month. YouTube is also considering charging for content libraries and access to live events. [AdAage]
- 500px Photography App Returns to App Store With 17+ Rating After 'Pornography' Removal After being pulled from the App Store last week over nude photos, photography browsing app 500px is now back online. During its absence, the app's rating was changed to 17+, and a "report" feature has been added for offensive photos. Search has also been tweaked to make it harder for offensive pictures to show up when using suggestive queries. [The Verge]
- Amazon Elastic Transcoder (beta) Amazon's newest web service is a video transcoder based in the cloud. Called Amazon Elastic Controller, the beta release will let you transcode up to 20 minutes of content per month for free, allowing you to prep your videos for whatever output format best suits your needs for web or mobile playback.
