Apple developed iTunes based on the program SoundJam in 1999. Apple purchased the program in 2000. Apple released iTunes version 1.0 in January 2001. It was originally developed for the Mac OS application. In 2001 version 2 was released for Mac X and the all new iPod. Version 3 added smart playlists and a rating system.
Smart playlists are playlists that can be set up by the user to automatically filter the music library from criteria set by the user. Some examples of smart playlists are My Top Rated, Top 25 Most Played, Recently Played and Recently Added. Smart playlists can be customized by the user to filter for song genre, album artwork, the date a song was added or include songs by artist or genre.
iTunes was originally developed for the Apple OSX operating system and iPod, iPad and iPhone running the iOS operating system.
In 2003 version 4.0 added the iTunes store and version 4.1 added compatibility with Windows 2000 and XP. In 2005 the iPod shuffle was introduced with the next version. iTunes version 4.9 released in 2005 had built in support for podcasts.
Version 7 included gapless playback. In 2007, the new iTunes version included compatibility with Windows Vista and the next version for Windows 2000. The next iTunes version offered 64 bit encryption for Windows and was released in 2008.
In 2005 television shows were made available for purchase in the iTunes store. Individual episodes of TV shows were offered for normal and high definition television.
iTunes U was released in 2007 to manage college lectures for universities which also included language lessons, lab demos and sports. Member college and universities had the option of having their own iTunes U web site.
In 2006 full length movies were offered for purchase in the iTunes store in regular and high definition format and in 2008 movie rentals were offered.
iTunes version 8 added Genius playlist; which automatically generates an iTunes playlist from the user's library which are similar to the song selected; grid view and a new visualizer. iTunes 9 offered Home Share, which enabled automatic updating of purchased iTunes products for computers on the same network. This update also offered a new iTunes store. The iTunes 9 update also added an iTunes LPs to the store that gave access to albums.
In 2010 iTunes version 10 was released with a feature called iTunes Ping, that is used for social networking. Also a new app iBook was released for use with the new iPad.
iTunes in the Cloud was introduced in 2011 a free service that supports wireless syncing of your iTunes products across multiple devices. iCloud was released to sync non iTunes purchases across multiple hardware.
