Stray Bullets Throughout New Mexico

Albuquerque, N.M. -- New Year's Eve celebrations nearly turned tragic for some people living in Albuquerque after stray bullets struck their property.Police continue to warn about the dangers of firing guns into the air, but people continue to shoot guns in celebration without thinking about the consequences.Samantha Gonzales lives in Albuquerque and just after midnight, started hearing gunshots going off and then her car was hit."About right here was a hole, and then there was lines that went out and the rest of the window was shattered," said Gonzalez. Gonzalez said she and her friends had just walked inside when the bullet slammed into her car, lodging into her taillight. She says she is just happy it was her car and not her or her friends.And she is not the only one whose property was hit. A viewer sent a picture of the hole a bullet made in his ceiling. He was lucky that it didn't hit anyone. Not everyone is so lucky. During a celebration in 2005, a stray bullet his Alyssa Boldin. It went through her head and came out through her neck. The little girl lived to tell her story.Her story should serve as a reminder of the dangers a stray bullet can pose. And Samantha Gonzalez has something to say about it after her scare, too."Obviously, what goes up must come down and they don't know where it's going to land. They could kill somebody and they don't even know it," said GonzalezBut police warn that they can't do anything to shooters unless they catch the person in action. So they need your help. If you see anyone fire a weapon in the air for fun, you are asked to call 505-242-COPS (2677).
